Top gymnast Carlos Yulo lands vault bronze in 1st tourney this season
The Philippines’ top gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo scored the bronze medal in the men’s vault event at the 53rd All-Japan Seniors Gymnastics Championships held in Takasaki Arena, Japan, his first competition since the 2019 SEA Games.
The Olympics-bound Yulo finished third place with Kenzo Shirai for their identical total of 14.733 points, trailing behind Rio Olympics bronze medalist Wataru Tanigawa and Keisuke Asato who were declared co-winners for the top spot with 14.900 points.
Yulo placed 19th in the floor exercise event with Tatsuki Tanaka and Kentaro Yunoki with a total of 13.966 points.
The Filipino world champion placed 12th out of 91 participants overall in the prestigious championship series with a total of 83.398 points in six disciplines.
The Japan tilt finals held on September 23, 2020, was the Filipino prodigy’s first since the 2019 SEA Games, where he reaped two golds and five silvers.
Carlos Yulo won a historic Gold as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win in the World Gymnastics Championships last year in Stuttgart, Germany.
The world champion is gearing up for the postponed Tokyo Olympics with coach Munehiro Kugimiya. He is the country’s second qualifier after top pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena.
