Catanduanes Police Chief Blames Mother and Son in Tarlac Slay, Tells People to Respect Cops
The family lost a mother and her son in the hands of a hot-tempered policeman in Paniqui, Tarlac, but the police chief in Catanduanes blames them for what happened.
In a post on Facebook, the police chief of Bato, Catanduanes, named Cptn. Ariel Ruego Buraga appears to laugh at Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25, and his mother, Sonya Gregorio, 52. He repeated the words of the policeman’s daughter who proudly shouted, “My father is a policeman” and the old woman’s reply in the form of the chorus for the “I Don’t Care” song by 2ne1.
This police chief thinks that people of all ages should respect policemen, no matter the situation.

The post angered so many netizens who pointed out that though he’s right in saying that people should respect policemen, this is not absolute and would depend on the situation. Did he even watch the video? The family might have their errors yet they did not deserve to be treated in that manner.
Alarmed over the police chief’s post, Bato Mayor Juan Rodulfo asked Catanduanes Police Provincial Director PCol. Brian Castillo to remove him from his post. The mayor pointed out that though the policeman had the right to express his opinion, he should have exercised prudence on his social media post.
“We will highly appreciate if the PNP (Philippine National Police) could assign another Chief-of-Police in this municipality to assuage the fears of the constituents of this LGU (local government unit) of a seemingly biased chief-of-police whose loyalty it seems rests primarily with his fellow policemen than with the constituents in his area of responsibility,” the mayor explained.
After receiving much flak on social media, the police chief removed his post, but screenshots had already circulated and the mayor had already seen it.
Meanwhile, Paniqui police chief Lt. Col. Noriel Rombaoa went viral for calling on his fellow policemen to practice self-control and maximum tolerance, reminding them that there’s a proper forum for dealing with such situations.
“Sa mga kasamahan po natin sa pulisya dapat self-control kasi nga maximum tolerance tayo, tayo ang may armas. Kung merong umaagrabiyado sa atin merong right forum po riyan, puwede nating kasuhan, not to the point na gagamitin natin ang baril natin,” he said.
After the post went viral, the police chief explained that he did not side with the erring policeman but was merely pointing out that even old people should respect policemen because they are also people who can feel sad when disrespected. Watch his interview here:
