Google News Initiative invites Filipino students to live fact-checking battle

Google is looking for the best fact-checkers among students in the Asia Pacific region.

Google News Initiative (GNI) is inviting Filipino students to a live fact-checking battle against other top students in Asia.

The live-action University Verification Challenge for students across the Asia Pacific region is part of a year-long University Verification Workshops campaign targeted at educating students and raising awareness around how to spot misinformation.

In teams of 2 or 3 people, the members will be challenged with intense quizzes putting their fact-checking skills to the test. With three challenges back-to-back live, each team will have 15 minutes to complete each challenge.

Winning teams from each bracket will enter the finals to be held during Google’s annual Trusted Media Summit. This is meant for more advanced detectives who have nailed the basics of fact-checking.

Participating students will get official certificates from digital media and information group DataLEADS, a GNI partner that trains and supports journalists in their fight against misinformation.

Students can register through this link by September 23, 2021. The challenges will happen in seven languages including English, which will take place on September 25, 2021, at 4:30 PM.
