Filipino para-athletes claim 9 medals at Asian Youth Para Games in Bahrain

Filipino youth para-athletes have secured the Philippines’ best medal finish at the Asian Youth Para Games (AYPG) with 1 gold, 6 silvers, and 2 bronzes in the recent regional games held in Manama, Bahrain.

Team Para Philippines’ 20-member contingent from the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PHILSPADA) delivered the country’s best performance in the fourth edition of the quadrennial meet held from December 2 to 6, 2021.

The country’s para-athletes were among the 750 participants from 30 countries who competed in the para-sports event for athletes with disabilities under 23 years of age.

Leading the Philippine national team is young para-swimmer Ariel Alegarbes who won gold in the S14 butterfly multiclass category, giving the country its first gold medal in the tournament in eight years.

Here is a summary of Team Philippines’ medal-winning performance at the 2021 Asian Youth Para Games:

  • Ariel Alegarbes won gold in the S14 butterfly multiclass category.
  • Alegarbes also added two silvers to the country’s nine-medal haul in the SB14 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke.
  • Para table tennis player Linard Sultan bagged two silvers in the men’s singles class 8 and the men’s mixed team event.
  • Para athletes Ronn Russel Mitra and Daniel Enderes, Jr. each won silver in the T20 400m and the T20 1500m events, respectively.
  • The country’s bronze medalists were para swimmer Angel Otom (100m freestyle S1-S10 multiclass age 16-18 category) and para table tennis player Mary Eloise Sable (women’s mixed team).

Filipino para-athletes had brought home 10 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze medals in the 2018 Asian Para Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Philippine para dancesport team has won seven gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals in the Polish Open World Qualifying Round in Lomianki, Poland.
