LISTEN: Sounds of EDSA People Power Revolution

Listen to the sounds of the EDSA People Power Revolution of February 22-25, 1986, as the award-winning PumaPodcast network releases two productions capturing the soundbites as well as the aspirations of the “bloodless revolution” that made Filipino pride soar 36 years ago as the world heaped praises on the legacy and model for people living under repressive and dictatorial regimes.

Back then radio was the main source of information for the thousands gathered in public places as the state still had full control of the media. The sound of the call to gather from the Catholic-run Radio Veritas brought people to the EDSA highway and more public places across the country.

When the radio station was destroyed by the Marcos forces, Radio Bandido took its place and continued to accompany the people on the streets bravely facing the soldiers and government weapons who were awaiting the command to disperse the crowd.

The people stood their ground. On February 25 the Ferdinand Marcos regime fell and his family had fled the Philippines, leaving a once-promising economy that had become the “Sick Man of Asia” with debts in the billions still to be paid in full, and leaving a record of more than 70,000 of the people jailed, over 30,000 tortured, over 3,000 killed and disappeared.

Habilin on Spotify

The pioneering podcast network in the Philippines today released “Pag-alala sa EDSA | Habilin”, a 12-part series about extraordinary acts by ordinary Filipinos during Martial Law.

“Decades have passed, but we still enjoy and are grateful for the freedoms that the EDSA People Power Revolution afforded us. May we always remember the sacrifices that Filipinos—ordinary citizens like you—made to secure peace and liberty for all,” reads the introduction to the Habilin podcast.

The project by the Commission on Human Rights and the SAMASA Party Alliance of the University of the Philippines that previously released the Lean Alejandro Documentary Film was produced by Wise Owl and PumaPodcast.

Access the Habilin podcast on Spotify and the PumaPodcast website.

RADYO MALAYA

PumaPodcast is scheduled to next premiere “Radyo Malaya: Soundbites of a Revolution” on February 26 and 27, 2022, a 10-episode radio drama reenactment that covers the highlights of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

“Balikan ang mga natatanging pangyayari – mula sa mga hakbang na unang nagudyok sa mamamayan, hanggang sa mapagpasyang pagkilos upang wakasan ang dekadang tiraniya – na umukit at nagtakda sa kasaysayan at tagumpay ng mamamayan at bayan,” the CCP posted on its announcement of the premiere.

Radyo Malaya is part of the offerings of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Film, Broadcast and New Media Division, and CCP Arts Education Department for its Pasinaya Open House Festival 2022.

The Radyo Malaya radio dramas can be accessed on the CCP Facebook page and CCP Official Vimeo account, DZRH 666 AM, DZUP 1602 AM, and the PIA News Desk YouTube channel.

PumaPodcast had also premiered the Chito Gascon Leadership Series in honor of the legacy of the Chairman of the Philippine Commission on Human Rights who passed away in 2021 because of COVID-19.
