As the Philippines prepares for the May 2025 midterm elections, political experts urge Filipinos to move beyond personality politics and focus on real issues that affect their daily lives.

In a recent episode of Beyond the Exchange with Rico Hizon, University of the Philippines Professor Jean Franco and University of Santo Tomas Professor Louie Ignacio called on voters to study candidates closely and stay engaged even after the elections.

“There are other viable candidates…offering alternative visions of how the country should move forward,” said Franco, highlighting the need to pay attention to all voices, not just the most popular names.

Ignacio added that voters often reduce choices to opposing sides without looking into the candidates’ stand on important matters like the budget, corruption, and foreign policy. “We should really look into [other players] so that the dynamics in the Senate or in the Congress will not focus on which side these politicians are, but instead on the significant issues.”

They emphasized the importance of youth voters, who now make up a large portion of the electorate. While Gen Z and Millennials are more educated and connected, Franco warned they are not a single group and are still vulnerable to misinformation. “I would say that watchdogs, media networks, and even social media companies should really strive to regulate or address fake news perpetrators.”

Ignacio encouraged voters to stay informed and demand accountability from elected leaders. “Make sure the information you’re absorbing is genuine… we make sure that they are accountable to what they have promised to us.”

Franco reminded Filipinos that their responsibility doesn’t end on election day. “We should not stop looking at the activities of these candidates once they win because governing is the hardest part.”

With new faces emerging from congressional hearings and a growing number of articulate public servants gaining attention, both professors said there’s still hope for real change—if the electorate chooses wisely.
