Why was the PR man of Finance Sec. Carlos Dominguez killed? ~SHARE

Public relations (PR) professional are hated by their enemies because they are capable of bringing down powerful politicians.

One of these PR people who was killed was Salvador "Bubby" Dacer. Buddy, who died in November 2000. His clients included many of the top figures in Philippine politics, notably Presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada.

Dacer's murder was dubbed the Dacer–Corbito double murder case which was one of the unsolved murders in the Philippines during the administration of Joseph Estrada.

Bubby Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito, were abducted in Makati, the business district of Manila. They were later killed, and their vehicle dumped. In 2001, a number of arrests were made.

The ultimate reasons for Dacer's murder remain a subject of debate.

So let's go to the killing of Michael D. Marasigan.

Who is Michael D. Marasigan? Marasigan who is also known as Mike, is the communications consultant of Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III, a man who is very close to the president.

Before Mike worked for Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III, Mr. Marasigan became BusinessWorld's first online editor in 1995. Then in 2004 his interests shifted and left mainstream media for good.

Bitten by the travel bug after chasing news stories around the country, Mr. Marasigan turned to producing travelogues for Living Asia Channel.

He then decided to return to online journalism after three years, this time under his own banner, OurPhilippines.tv, an Internet channel devoted to local travel destinations and culture.

If his murder was work related, I cannot see why anyone would kill a journalist whose topics are about local travel destinations and culture.

Mike and his brother Christopher were attacked and killed by two gunmen riding in tandem in San Juan City, where they lived. If Mike was the target, the question is who ordered the murder of Marasigan and what is the motive.

The Duterte administration has a department whose job is to protect journalist and media practitioners. This office is called the  Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS)’ and they issued a statement on Michael Marasigan Killing:

"The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) is deeply saddened and strongly condemns, in no uncertain terms, the killing of Michael D. Marasigan, former Editor of The BusinessWorld and his brother, Christopher in San Juan City yesterday.

Upon instruction from Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, Co-Chair of the Task Force, PTFoMS Executive Director USec. Joel Sy Egco immediately spoke with Eastern Police District Director Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula and directed him to leave no stone unturned in finding out who are the perpetrators behind this dastardly attack.

While it is yet to be confirmed if this incident falls under the mandate of the Task Force in relation to the Administrative Order No. 1 (AO1) of Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte in protecting the life, liberty and security of Media Workers, there is a possibility that the killing may be related to Marasigan’s previous work as a journalist.

The PTFoMS will continue to monitor the progress of the investigation and provide the necessary legal assistance.

The Task Force is committed in fulfilling its mandate to keep media workers free from any and all forms of threats and violence that may be carried out against them and their families."
