Bagyong Vinta PAGASA Update (December 21, 2017)

Bagyong Vinta 2017 has intensified into a Tropical Storm, weather bureau PAGASA announced on its bulletin update on Thursday, December 21.

At 4AM today, forecasters said the eye of Bagyong Vinta was spotted 510 kilometers East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is moving West at 18 kph.

Forecast Positions:
  • 24 Hour(Tomorrow morning): 80 km Northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur
  • 48 Hour(Saturday morning):130 km West of Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte
  • 72 Hour(Sunday morning): 110 km Southwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan
  • 96 Hour(Monday morning):170 km South Southwest of Pagasa Island, Palawan (OUTSIDE PAR)

Tropical storm warning signal number 2 (61-120kph expected in 24 hrs) was hoisted over the province of Surigao del Sur.

Impacts of the wind according to PAGASA:
  • Light to Moderate damage to high risk structures;
  • Very light to light damage to medium-risk structures;
  • No damage to very light damage to low risk structures
  • Unshielded, old dilapidated schoolhouses, makeshift shanties, and other structures of light materials are partially damaged or unroofed.
  • A number of nipa and cogon houses may be partially or totally unroofed.
  • Some old galvanized iron (G.I.) roofs may be peeled or blown off.
  • Some wooden, old electric posts are tilted or downed.
  • Some damage to poorly constructed signs/billboards
  • In general, the winds may bring light to moderate damage to the exposed communities. Most banana plants, a few mango trees, ipil-ipil and similar types of trees are downed or broken
  • Some coconut trees may be tilted with few others broken
  • Rice and corn may be adversely affected
  • Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some heavy-foliaged trees blown down.

Meanwhile, signal number 1 (30-60kph expected in 36 hrs) was raised in Southern Leyte in the Visayas region, and Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Northern Davao Oriental, Northern Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin in Mindanao.
