Dad Who Bartered Chickens for Kids’ Gadget for Online School, Gets Scammed

Remember that kind dad who bartered his chickens so he can have a gadget for his kids’ online school got scammed by someone pretending to help him process financial assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Tatay Lemur Enriquez went viral many weeks ago for bartering some chickens in exchange for a secondhand gadget that his kids can use for online school. Netizens took pity on this loving, hardworking father who was willing to do everything to help his kids still go to school amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Help poured in for the family, with plenty of netizens offering to send them brand-new gadgets instead – to all of his children.

What impressed people more is that Tatay Lemur turned down many would-be donors when the kids already received one gadget each. Instead of taking advantage of people’s sympathy, he told them that there are still a lot of other families like them who needed help. He urged these would-be donors to give their donations to these families.

Tatay Lemur earns much less for selling rabbits and chickens because there are fewer buyers these days, yet he did not accept all the offered donations to sell them! Admirable, isn’t he?

Since there were so many people who helped them, Tatay Lemur had no idea that the person who offered to help him process ayuda from the DSWD turned out to be a scammer.

It all began with a friend request and message from a certain Mondejar Antonnette, probably not her real name, who asked whether he was already able to receive the GCASH assistance from the government agency.

Mondejar offered advice. Soon after, a certain Mea Lenna introduced herself as care request [specialist]. Tatay Lemur so innocently replied to the message, not knowing that he was already giving out his details to the scammers – including his PIN!

Sadly, he lost about Php6,500 of the money he had on GCASH from the earnings he received for selling rabbits! Tatay Lemur had no idea whether he could still get his money back but shared his experience so others won’t fall for the same trap.
