14-Year-Old Girl Diagnosed with UTI, Mistakenly Given Medicine for Mental Ailment

A 14-year-old girl diagnosed with UTI was mistakenly given a medicine for mental ailment. This led to the girl being hospitalized after experiencing adverse effects from the wrong medication!

It was supposed to be just an ordinary check up for the 14-year-old girl who was diagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI). She hails from Matuguinao town in Samar.

The municipal health officer of Matuguinao had correctly prescribed the girl with Cefalexin tablet to treat the ailment. But even with the correct diagnosis and prescription, the girl was given Haloperidol which is a medicine for patients with mental disorder.

The wrong medication was allegedly dispensed by the nursing attendant or nursing aide named Rossel Davantes, as identified by the girl’s cousin, Dherma Velarde Malahay. How she got the medicines mixed up remains a puzzle, considering that “Cefalexin” and “Haloperidol” are clearly very different from each other.

Since her original treatment for UTI could actually be done on an out-patient basis, the girl was allowed to go home after the checkup. But she started salivating and began experiencing uncontrolled rolling of the eyes upward, similar to seizure or epileptic episodes.

The girl was rushed to Gandara District Hospital where she was treated for 1 week. Thankfully, the girl is now alright but her family is seeking justice as the incident could have gotten much worse! They are also afraid that the wrong medication might have some permanent effects on the girl’s brain.

Matuguinao town Mayor Aran Boller assured the family and the public that a thorough and fair investigation will be done to ensure that justice will be served.

We will conduct a fair investigation, if evidence warrant, then maybe we can dismiss whoever responsible of the alleged giving a wrong medicine to the patient,” the mayor promised.
