Mabel Bautista, a fan of the South Korean boyband BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys, created a large handmade artwork featuring the members of BTS.
The artwork was made of 18,000 unused buttons, measuring 1.47m tall and 2.81m wide. The buttons were originally owned by the mother of Mabel’s friend. These were supposed to be thrown away, however, Mabel asked if she could just have them instead. Based on News 5 story, her friend’s mother planned to open a uniform business, but unfortunately was not able to push through.
In an interview with News 5, Mabel said that buttons are universal fasteners connecting the world through an everyday item. She compared this with how BTS’ music reaches people across the globe; emphasizing that the famous boyband has this great ability of connecting to their fans.
BTS is a South Korean septet boyband that debuted in 2013. The group’s early years was not easy for them. However, aside from their talent in music and entertainment, hard work and immense support from their fans who are called “Army”, they did not simply make a huge success in South Korea and Asia, but was able to conquer the international scene.
Mabel made this BTS portrait for 10 days. In another story coverage by CNN, she shared that she dyed some of the buttons to achieve different shades of gray.
