A bride walked out of her wedding when her husband-to-be failed to recite the multiplication table of two during their wedding ceremony. The names of the couple were kept confidential but their ceremony was held in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The couple were to be wed following an arranged marriage. The bride became suspicious of the groom’s educational attainment and asked him for a quick math test. When the man couldn’t recite the correct multiplication table, the woman decided to back out of the marriage. According to her, she couldn’t marry someone who doesn’t know basic math.

The bride’s cousin admitted that the groom’s family had failed to disclose to them that he was uneducated even before the arrangement of their wedding.

“The groom’s family had kept us in the dark about his education. He may not have even gone to school. The groom’s family had cheated us. But my brave sister walked out without fearing social taboo,” she was quoted as saying in a report from The Tribune.

Due to the cancellation of the wedding, the two families agreed to return the gifts and jewelry they gave each other as part of their tradition.

While this may seem unusual, such an incident isn’t unique. Back in 2015, an Indian bride also dumped her groom when he incorrectly answered a basic addition question. The groom reportedly answered “17” after the wife asked him to add 15 and six during the wedding.
