Miss Universe Singapore wears a cape reading ‘Stop Asian Hate’ during Miss Universe National Costume

Bernadette Belle Ong, the Miss Universe Singapore candidate who was born and raised in the Philippines until she was 11 years old, displayed a strong message during the National Costume competition of this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

During the National Costume competition, the Miss Universe candidates will showcase how rich their country’s culture is. This is one of the most talked about segments of the pageant before the most awaited coronation night.

In this year’s National Costume competition, many of the candidates have expressed strong messages regarding the current events and social campaigns that have been circulating across the globe today.

One of this was how Miss Universe Singapore candidate Bernadette Belle Ong used this opportunity to send her support in the campaign of ‘Stop Asian Hate’.

On her Instagram post, she explained that her national costume was inspired by the Singapore’s National Flag that symbolizes unity and social harmony.

“My National Costume is inspired by Singapore’s National Flag— it symbolises unity for all and social harmony in a multi-racial, multi-cultural and inter-religious country.”

Many pageant fans expressed their admiration on Miss Universe Singapore’s national costume. Aside from her great performance, her strong message has touched many fans. One netizen agreed with her and mentioned that this is a great message and a wake up call.

Bernadette Belle Ong thanked Miss Universe for giving her this opportunity.

It was further revealed that the designer of her national costume was the Filipino designer Arwin Meriales. And the message of ‘Stop Asian Hate’ was hand painted by Paulo Espinosa; also a Filipino artist.

The Miss Universe 2020 pageant will be held on May 16 EST at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, United States.
